This year's Equinox Art & Music Fest will open at 12noon on March 24th! Our new location in the Farmers Market Building will take on a street fest atmosphere for the day with art, fine craft and "live" music until 8pm. A special feature this year includes an outdoor film with more music at 8pm. We will be advertising with Carolina Arts Magazine, the Conway Journal, Rivertown Radio, the Myrtle Beach Chamber and Sun News websites and and various other media. We will also be promoting the Equinox with Cecil Chandler on Carolina Live at Noon on March 20th on WPDE! Make sure to tune in and tell your friends! Also, help us grow this event by joining our Equinox page on Facebook and by sharing the event info with your friends, customers and family!

Muse on the Waccamaw Songwriting and Poetry Contest

The Horry County Memorial Library, the Horry County Museum, and CREATE! Conway is hosting the Muse on the Waccamaw Songwriting and Poetry Contest. The songwriting contest is for people 18 years and older and is broken into several categories to include best original song performed by an individual, a band, and best original instrumental performed by an individual or band. The poetry contest features two age categories to include individuals age 13-17 and individuals age 18 and older. Interested parties can begin submitting their online entries at horrysong.tv up until April 30. Online voting will begin May 1 to June 15, which will establish the top three finalists in each category. On Saturday, July 16, the top three finalists in each category will perform live at Edwards Recital Hall at Coastal Carolina University. Winners in each category and a grand prize winner will be picked by a panel of judges.

The morning of the 2011 Equinox Art & Music Fest was blessed with blustery spring breezes and the poetry of Pat the Poet, Patricia Robinson. Throughout the day the live music was fresh and hip, with a soulful rhythm and a rockin' beat, salted and peppered with everything in between from acoustic Americana to Country.

We are counting the days! The Equinox Art & Music Fest is Saturday March 19th and will showcase a diverse blend of art and independent music. The Equinox celebrates community and culture and provides a venue for artists, art fans, creative minds and independent musicians to come together for a day of inspiration, imagination, music and the arts. This year's festival, a true celebration for creativity, will be held under the oaks... at the historic Horry County Court House located at 1201 Third Ave. in downtown Conway, SC. The event will feature performing and visual arts along with fine art and artisan works for sale. CREATE! Conway presents the Equinox Art & Music Fest to entertain, teach and inspire.

Featured performances include: Pat the Poet and musicians Brian Roessler, Claudia VS The Queen of Hearts, Sleeping Policeman/Charles Grace, Big Bam Boom, Phil Whittaker, Todd Roth/My Buddy Todd, Dan Barnhart, Jentry Rose, Randall Hill, Hound Dog Hanson, When Mary Met Vinny and more. Listen to a range of styles from acoustic folk to alternative rock. Music kicks off at 11am and continues until 7pm.

Featured artists include: Peggy New, Johnny Warren, Emily Smith, Emil Koepcke, Lori Kaim, Ruth Cox, Jennifer Henley, Susan Allan, Rachel Jones, Terri Eddinger, Shawna Roessler, Tony Morano, Ed and Barbara Streeter and more. Conway Artists Create Hand Blown Glass Christmas Ornament for the White House.

A Christmas ornament handcrafted at Conway Glass Center has made its way to the nation's capital to decorate the U.S. travel themed Christmas tree in the White House!

Conway Glass Center provided a large hand blown, ocean-themed ornament to represent the Grand Strand region. Inspired by the Atlantic Ocean, the ornament was created through a vital combination of fire, sand and air by glass artists Barbara and Ed Streeter of Conway, South Carolina.

A lot of time and thought went in to creating the ornament, and it's great for our area to be included among the Christmas decorations in the President's home," said Barbara Streeter, co-owner of Conway Glass Center. Area businesses have decorated and donated festive holiday wreaths for auction and they are are now on display at Bodega! Stop by Bodega at Third and Main, bids will be accepted on these beautiful wreaths until 4pm on Saturday, November 27th. Also, Saturday November 27th is "Small Business Saturday" which makes it a great day to come downtown and support your local merchants!

Musicianʼs Group to Award Guitar to Deserving Youth

The Myrtle Beach Musicians Network (MUNET) will award a new guitar to a young music student attending Boys And Girls Club Of The Grand Strand. President / Co-founder of “MUNET” Michael James will award the guitar. Students qualify for a guitar by attending an 8 week basic program and learning the information presented. Now young student qualifies to Advance with his class to receive cost-free private music lessons funded by MUNET fund raiser. Guitars are donated by Andy Owings Music Store.
Don Hall, Director of The Boys And Girls Club hopes the music curriculum will result in the Boys and Girls Club ensemble to represent to the public what is possible for underprivileged youth through his organization.

Myrtle Beach Musicians Network is an open membership organization created for artists by artists. Their aim is to strengthen professional relationships, create avenues for success, elevate the profile of Grand Strand's professional musician and in doing so, to develop, strengthen and invigorate our music community. Boys and Girls Clubʼs Music curriculum is seen as part of MUNETʼs responsibility to local musicians and the community.

Conway Glass Center, located in Conway, SC is celebrating the reopening of its new glass gallery and glass blowing studio on November 6^th. The Glass Center will feature free glass blowing demonstrations all day 11am – 4pm with “live” music and refreshments from 4pm – 6pm. Everyone is invited to watch as local glass blowers create works of art from molten glass. Glass blowers will craft colorful bowls, vases, pumpkins and ornaments right before your eyes. Learn about the century-old tools and techniques still used today by modern day glass blowers. Enjoy an art reception with “live” music in the gallery by Brian Roessler and refreshments from 4pm – 6pm.

Conway Glass Center is the “Home of Pop’s Original Blown Glass.” The Glass Center reopened the glass blowing studio and renovated glass/art gallery in October of 2010. November 6^th marks the anniversary of fifteen years of "glass blowing" for the owners of Conway Glass Center, Ed & Barbara Streeter. With the recent closing of Pop’s Glass Station, the owners have brought the glass blowing studio and gallery back to its original location at 2416 Main Street.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC November 2nd, 6-8 pm, The 2010 tourist season is all but over, then before you know it… the Christmas Season will be upon us. Grand Strand’s live music venue owners, managers, staff and live music supporters are being invited to pause, count their blessings, celebrate and enjoy the gathering of “old buds” and some new friends. ‘Myrtle Beach Musician Network’ will also use this opportunity to commemorate the finish of the organization’s first season of operation.

The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Of Commerce will be on hand to initiate a ceremonial ribbon cutting to endorse MUNET as one of their newer members and to launch the organization’s offseason program of activities. Certificates of appreciation will also awarded to everyone who participated in MUNET’s Charity BBQ and Concert. The function raised thousands of dollars and gathered numerous instruments for ‘The Boys and Girls Club Of The Grand Strand’ in August of this year.

The festivities will take place at the newly established “Performing Arts Center” located in the Coastal Grand Mall, next to Andy Owings Yamaha Piano Store, and across the sidewalk from Books-A-Million. On October 2nd Create! Conway presented the Live Oak Arts and Music Festival. In it's 5th year, this year's festival was by far the best ever and the location was perfect. Something magical happens when you put so many creative voices in one place and being under the live oaks in front of the majestic Horry County Court House, well you just had to be there. The lawn was filled with crafters, fine artists and musicians, each with a story of their own to tell. The evening was topped off with soulful blues performed by the legendary Drink Small with the My Buddy Todd Blues Band. No one wanted the night to end, including Drink. A special thanks goes out to Brian Roessler and all of the musicians, artists and volunteers who worked so hard to make this year's event a success! You guys are awesome!

Every “First Saturday” in downtown, Create! Conway promotes local art and this weekend is no exception! Visit the Farmers Market early, it opens at 8am and in addition to local produce you’ll find homemade soaps, quilts and textiles, handcrafted wooden bowls, pottery, hand blown glass pumpkins, recycled art lights, handmade jewelry and more.

At Bodega on the corner of Third and Main, Artist Vic Gillispie is featured. His painting of the Theatre of the Republic “Opening Night” will be on display. A portion of the proceeds from print sales will benefit the Main Street Theatre. Vic works in acrylics, egg tempera, and watercolor.

Sassy Girl Gifts & Special Things is donating $5 to Katie's Project for every Sassy Flower Pot sold now through Sept. 30. The Sassy Flower Pot shares the positive message of "Grow where you are planted," capturing the spirit of Sassy Girl and Katie's Project. The flowerpots are designed and hand-painted by Sassy Girl owner Vicki Castle and local artist Sara Borusovic. Each pot has been autographed by Borusovic. Sassy Girl Gifts & Special Things is located at 1019 Fourth Ave., Conway.

Be sure to visit the Conway Farmers Market, it opens at 8am! Fresh local fruits and veggies, organic meats and dairy...You can even grab a hot dog and lemonade for lunch!

The Fine Arts and Crafts Show will be held on the sidewalk along Second Street, across from the Market Hall in Cheraw, SC.

All juried members of the Artisans of the SC Cotton Trail and the SC Tobacco Trail do not have to go through the jury process, and should go ahead and send in fees and forms to reserve a space.
All others interested in showing must participate in the jury by submitting 5 jpg images representative of the work they plan to exhibit and one or more jpg images representative of their booth set up.

Accepted artists should submit fees and forms to Beth Wicker, 192 McMillan Road, Cheraw, SC 29520 and must be received by October 1,2010. No artists will be permitted to show unless all fees and forms have been received by this date.

Area Artists Featured in Pee Dee Art Show!

This month over fifty pieces of art representing the work of the Pee Dee’s finest artists will be presented in the Jean & James Fort Gallery at Black Creek Arts Council in Hartsville, SC. The exhibit includes the juried Artisans of the South Carolina Tobacco Trail and Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail. The exhibit opens with a reception on August 5^th, 2010 at 5:30pm in the gallery. Among participating ASCTT artists are Susan Allen, Holly Beaumier, Lon Calhoun, Jack Cayton, Ruth Cox, Emily Estes, Brenda Hardwick, John Johnson, Lori Kaim, Tony Morano, Ed & Barbara Streeter.

· Susan Allen’s pine needle baskets are laboriously crafted from the needles of the long leaf pine. For decoration she slices a walnut for a handle. Susan’s baskets are an example of a centuries old American craft.

· Holly Beaumier creates earthenware serving platters, spoon rests, and soap dishes imprinted with leaves found in the area. Tobacco leaves are donated by local growers. Holly also produces a product line of whimsical children’s décor items.

· Artist Lon Calhoun of Conway creates mixed media paintings of local historic sites, tobacco barns, local churches and landmarks. He is also known for his delightful collection of Carousel Horses and German Organ from the old Myrtle Beach Pavilion.

· A background in aviation and the hobby of photography served as the catalyst for artist Jack Cayton’s art career. Primarily a realist painter, Jack works in a traditional manner in oil, painting the effects of the weather and the season on the landscape.

· Myrtle Beach artist Ruth Cox paints to capture the "feeling, mood and character of place" in her art. Some of her favorite subjects are the Waccamaw River, the inlet and marshes, the beach, old tobacco barns and farms and areas where a simpler way of life still exists.

· Emily Estes is known for her delicious smelling handmade artisan soaps found every Saturday at the Conway Farmers Market. Did you know that she is also an accomplished fabric artist? Her fabric art “Live Oak in the Sunset” will be on display as well in the upcoming exhibit.

· Nichols resident, Brenda Hardwick’s unusual tobacco leaf dolls are also new on the art scene. Her dolls are made from recycled items and tobacco leaves. Brenda developed the dolls as a means to preserve the memories of tobacco after the tobacco buy-out occurred.

· Potter John Johnson grew up with a passion for art. He got into pottery in high school and was a fine art and pottery major in college. In 2004, John opened Mud Bucket Pottery where he creates his original wheel thrown pottery for galleries across the Southeast.

· An Art Walk favorite, you can meet Lori Kaim as she paints en plein air and talks with visitors on First Saturdays in downtown Conway. Lori works in acrylics and enjoys capturing the natural beauty of her surroundings in her paintings.

· Tony Morano is inspired to photograph by the local landscape and wildlife of the low country. Tony‘s image “Barn Owl” recently won an award at the 2010 Winyah Rivers Foundation Photo Contest.

· Glassblowers Ed & Barbara work together as a team in their Conway studio creating colorful blown glass ornaments, pumpkins, bowls and vases. They also teach glass blowing classes and host live narrated glass blowing demonstrations every October through April.

The August show is the first of a series of shows for ASCTT/ASCCT artists. In addition, ASCTT will host art business workshops in the fall. Also look for the new http://PeeDeeArt.com website. A brand new state-of-the-art glass blowing studio will open in Conway in October. There is only one hot glass studio in South Carolina that features glass blowing classes to the public and free glass blowing demonstrations. Located right here in Conway, South Carolina the new glass studio will open in October. The studio is conveniently located two miles west of the Horry County Museum on Main Street and two miles east of the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Also located on the SC Tobacco Trail, Conway Glass Center makes a great day trip for those interested in the area's culture, history and art.

Charity BBQ, Concert, and Musical Equipment Drive to Benefit The Boys and Girls Club of The Grand Strand

In cooperation with Horry County Schools Adult and Community Education Program, Myrtle Beach Musicians Network is sponsoring a charity BBQ, Concert and Musical Equipment Drive to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Grand Strand. The event will take place August 1, from 2pm to 6pm, at Longbeard's Bar and Grill located at 5040 Carolina Forest Blvd, Myrtle Beach, SC.

Longbeard's Restaurant will be providing food, and nonalcoholic beverages. Ten local musical acts will provide a variety of continuous indoor and outdoor entertainment. The public is encouraged to donate new and used instruments and equipment. Local technicians will donate their services for any needed repairs.
All instruments will then be given to The Boys and Girls Club of the Grand Strand. Music classes and private lessons will be funded through $10. BBQ ticket donations.

"Art adds to a community, attracts a core of people who are intelligent, creative and bring new ideas. They have a lot of energy, which is a really wonderful thing for a community to have."

Landscape painters will invade Conway, South Carolina in September. Some of the area's most talented outdoor painters will bring their paint boxes and easels to Conway, well known for its picturesque vistas of the Waccamaw River, historic buildings and the moss-laden live oaks.

This remarkable 8th Annual event, “Paint Conway 2010”, is happening with the support of the International Plein Air Painters, CREATE! Conway and the Horry County Arts and Cultural Council. Artists are expected from North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia to converge on Conway all day on Friday and Saturday September 10th and 11th to paint outdoors throughout the town.

Plein air artists seek the quality of natural light and atmosphere outdoors. Their artwork is in direct response to the beauty they find in nature. They use a variety of media, from oils, through watercolors and pastels. The public will be able to join in the fun by watching individual artists work and moving from painter to painter each day from 9am – 3pm.

An artists' reception will be held from 5:30pm until 7:00pm, with a presentation of awards at the gallery at Conway Glass Center at 2416 Main Street. The public is invited to come, view the art and meet the artists.

Event organizer, Barbara Streeter says, “There is a special joy in these plein air paintings and this is a chance for people to see professional artists at work, developing their paintings in response to the beauty in nature.”

Plein air painting developed in France in the mid 19th century and is becoming increasingly popular. Last year's World Wide Paint Out event drew artists from all over the Globe. Many new plein air painting-groups were formed directly from this event.

IPAP, who has members who reside throughout the World, is the blanket organization for individual plein air groups and was created for the sole purpose of advancing the execution and enjoyment of plein air painting without limitations of borders or regions.

IPAP members are the silent activists in the ongoing environmental struggle.
They call attention to the threatened urban scene and the vanishing farmland for history. Its members share inspiration and encouragement both on the Internet and at "paint outs". They encourage other artists to get out and do it, to paint with other artists and share ideas.

This event is happening simultaneously in international locations and Paint! Conway is part of this 8th WORLDWIDE group event hosted by International Plein Air Painters. You can join IPAP or learn more about the group and see some of the many events happening posted on the website www.i-p-a-p.com

What a great Open Mic Night it was Tuesday in downtown Conway! Musicians showed up with guitars in hand and entertained the enthusiastic group of music lovers until almost midnight. Everyone had a rockin' good time and had a real appreciation of the original music along with all those long time favorite tunes we love. If you haven't had a chance to stop by on Tuesdays, just remember, EVERY TUESDAY NIGHT at the Crafty Rooster on Laurel Street and it all starts at 8PM. If you are a musician, just show up and sign in. A true professional, Brian Roessler is the music guru in charge of it all. Brian also hosts the popular Myrtle Beach Open Mics on Thursdays at Fresh Brewed Coffee House.

On Saturday, May 1st downtown Conway will be alive with Art and Music all day! Start your day with breakfast at one our famous breakfast spots and then begin your walk at Conway Farmer's Market. It opens at 8am! Their new location on Laurel Street (behind the Rivertown Bistro) puts fresh fruits and veggies, local art and live bluegrass music right downtown! Bodega opens at 9:30am. Head over there for a taste of one of their yummy food or coffee samples. Downtown stores open at 10am and the Create! Conway Art Walk and the Rivertown Music and Art Festival begin at 10am as well. Painting demos, glass blowing demos, pottery demos, a wine tasting, Eco Boat Tours and downtown dining and shopping are all within a three block area. Enjoy a whole day of music and art with downtown activities until 8pm.

We were blessed with a beautiful sunshiny day for the Equinox Art and Music Event and the one thing I noticed when I was posting photos was all of the smiling faces! Everyone had an awesome afternoon. Downtown Conway is such a great spot to showcase art and music events. You just can't help but feel the great energy in the air. On April 3rd from 10am - 5pm Create! Conway will present the April First Saturday Art Walk featuring the kick-off of the new Mural Project. Ruth Cox will be sketching, measuring, drawing and collaborating with area artists and students on the design of this new downtown mural. Sponsored by the City of Conway this project is just one more way Create! Conway is making a positive impact for artists and downtown businesses. We will keep you posted on this very exciting project.

Saturdays attendance at the ECO-Art Walk affirmed two things, tourists love Conway and Conway loves our tourists. Who could have imagined that we would have been blessed with so many visitors from all over the US, shopping, dining and enjoying Conway on a Saturday in March? Did we see this coming? Absolutely! Were we surprised that we succeeded so quickly? Well, yes. I must admit, I was a little surprised. You never know. You can only do your best, recruit the best people and work together toward common goals. CREATE! is a totally volunteer organization comprised of the most talented dedicated individuals in our community. That is why we have been so successful. We all want and need downtown Conway to thrive. Our volunteers, retailers, artists, musicians and board members all have a vested interest in the success of our events and a passion for art and music! As downtown Conway grows (as it will), CREATE! Conway will continue to recruit and inspire those around us to bring their best to the table. On Feb 6th Pop's Glass presented "Hearts Afire", a day of glass blowing in the studio and awesome music in the gallery compliments of When Mary Met Vinny. Downtown Conway, SC had over 400 visitors from all over the USA and Canada come out for Create! Conway's First Saturday Art Walk. Most of them stopped by Pop's to shop, enjoy the music and see the glass blowing demos. Thank you to Mary and Vinny Nicoletti for a wonderful day of great music to blow glass by. It's A New Year!

This has been an exciting year for CREATE! Conway. We faced a few obstacles, but we have successfully hosted First Saturday Art Walks each month in 2009. We look forward to doing it again in 2010! In addition, we brought back a favorite downtown event, the "Live Oak Art Festival" and organized the first "Paint! Conway" as part of the World-Wide Plein Air Paint Out. Over the years Art Walks have brought thousands of visitors to downtown Conway to shop, dine and experience our art and music events. Promotion and organization of CREATE! Conway events takes numerous volunteer hours each month. We were encouraged to hear that our efforts have not gone unnoticed. This week we learned our blog is featured in US Airways Magazine as the source for information on art and cultural events in historic downtown Conway. (December issue, page 56, 40,000 copies distributed!) When a national magazine promotes our Art Walks, restaurants, shops, and downtown Conway in such a positive way, we all benefit! This coming year we plan to grow all of our events and add a few new ones. Look for even more artists and musicians and a few more fun events to liven things up! In 2010 we will also be launching several new promotional projects that we feel will benefit historic downtown Conway, SC:

The Conway Tourism web site and Downtown Conway Shopping and Dining Map are marketing tools that play an integral part of our mission; to maximize the business potential of downtown Conway. The CREATE! Conway™ web site will link to the Conway Tourism web site creating a synergy between our cultural, tourism and business activities downtown. The Murals Project is a collaborative effort between CREATE! Conway™, the City of Conway and Conway High School. Local muralist Ruth Cox will be working along with Sandi Snyder and her CHS Art Students in the development and execution of the project. The murals will be painted on Third Avenue and will be completed by summer 2010. Our new RiverTown Social will start in January and is a monthly upbeat networking opportunity for those engaged in the downtown Conway business, arts and music community. These meet-ups will be held in the evening at various downtown venues.

If you are a business owner and would like to host an artist or musician for First Saturday or would like to participate in our RiverTown Socials please call me! There is no charge for the Art Walk or RiverTown Social, we just ask for a positive attitude and your continued support for the good of downtown Conway.

Theater, Music & Art Featured at Live Oak Art & Music Festival

An eclectic mix of live music, art and great food made for an entertaining afternoon in downtown Conway on Saturday October 3rd. The wonderful weather was a blessing for the hundreds of visitors that came out to enjoy the day in historic downtown Conway.

Conway's Paint Out an Inspiring Success!

Create! Conway and the Horry County Arts and Cultural Council had a great time hosting Conway's World Wide Plein Air Paint Out on September 11th & 12th! Painters from North & South Carolina spent two days in Conway painting, sharing ideas and meeting art lovers from around the country. We had visitors from as far away as Oklahoma who came to meet, watch the artists work and enjoy our downtown. The cool weather on Friday morning was wonderful as artists arrived early to scope out their spots. They painted the Ocean Fish Market, Kingston Presbyterian Church, locations along the Waccamaw River Walk, the Peanut Warehouse, and Kingston Lake. Saturday morning everyone headed to the river and enjoyed the sites and sounds of Conway's Farmer's Market. The vibrant colors of fresh produce, and the sounds of Bluegrass music inspired the painters to capture the local flavor of our community. Over twenty five paintings were completed in oils and acrylics and went on display at Black Water Market on Saturday Night for a reception, exhibit and sale. First Place went to Ruth Cox for her painting "Riverwalk" and merit awards went to Dan Smart, Marie Kasper and Sharon Bowling. It was all in all an awesome event and painters are already planning for next year!
